From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 3–5—In clear, cogent prose, Cheney lays out the tumultuous situation of the country at the end of the Revolutionary War. She moves on to the gathering of the representatives at the convention and colorfully describes the various issues and arguments that had to be resolved before the Constitution could be written. The vocabulary is rich, and the author incorporates fascinating details about the personalities who undertook this monumental task. The text is placed on clean white space on a quarter of each spread, with a quote from one of the historical figures at the bottom. The remaining three quarters of the spread is given to Harlin's impressive artwork, described as being done in "various water media." The sweep of these realistic paintings across the pages highlights the drama of each situation, and the artist makes remarkable use of perspective, making readers feel as though they are part of the actual scene. A delight for history buffs, perfect for reports, and a good read in general, this well-researched offering should be a first purchase for most libraries.—Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJ Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. WE THE PEOPLE: THE STORY OF OUR CONSTITUTION is a factual and beautifully illustrated book about how and why our Constitution was created, including the compromises that had to be made in order for all the states to accept and ratify it. This is the kind of book that can pique a child's interest in history at an early age. I think many adults will find they have forgotten or were never taught the real history behind our Constitution. This book could take weeks to read completely as discussion and additional research on the side naturally occurs. I recommend this book for children and adults alike. Lynne Cheney did a really good job, in my opinion.
My almost 9-year old says reading about the Constitution & how it was formed was pretty cool. I only gave it four stars because it gives you all this history about how the document came about, but then the Constitution isn't included, so I had to go out to the Internet to read it to my sons. It would be better if this were included. However, this is a good & interesting story. It held my 9-year old's attention, but not my 6-year old's - not surprising as only superheroes do! Also, I believe my 8 (almost 9) year old can read this on his own, no problem.
Wonderful book, I read it to my US History and US History Honors class each year. Dr. Cheney does a great job breaking down the writing of the constitution so that even the common person with no background could understand why and how it was written. This is a must have book for any US History or even Social Studies class to have.
Good book - gave it to all of my grandchildren's teachers. Not a Cheney fan, but politics aside, she did a good job on this book.
Great to teach patriotism and pride in our great USA. History is essential to knowing the past. Accurate and simple.
Excellent historical explanations and background for any age. I thoroughlyenjoyed reading it to my grandchild and learned things as well. Mrs. Cheneyis an excellent writer and we are proud to have to his book in our home.
I love the book for myself, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. The people I have given the book to love it from adults on down to great grand children. Thank goodness more books for children about our country are coming out. Thank you Mrs. Cheney. Love all your book for young people. These are subjects that are not being taught in school well enough!Mary
This is really a pretty good book. I think my boys are still a bit young for it (5 and 3), even tho they LOVE learning about history. I really think they'll like it more when they get older. They still pick it for story time sometimes, but will only sit through about half of it.
